The centuries old ‘Nakshi Kantha’ of Bengal was a village craft that became overshadowed in the wake of printing. not before Shamlu Dudeja revived Kantha in its new avtar, as a decorative stitch, in addition to keeping the old quilting form alive. Kantha was popularized amongst Indian designers, such as Rohit Khosla and Tarun Tahiliani. It featured prominently in the wardrobes of fashionable Indians and then launched into the global market.
|
Several successful exhibitions abroad led to Kantha finding a well-deserved place in the world of folk-art - internationally.
‘Kantha’ is a reflection of the women of Bengal, as the work allows them to develop highly artistic sensibilities and express their personalities through their handiwork. As such, each piece is unique and truly reflects the personality of the woman that produced it. |
